In the 15th century Florence was at the centre of the artistic revolution that would later be known as the Renaissance. Today the Renaissance remains the main attraction here—the abundance of art treasures is mind-boggling. Florence's is a subtle beauty—its unprepossessing palaces built in local stone aren't showy and take on a certain magnificence at daybreak and sunset. A walk along the Arno offers memorable views that haven't much changed in 700 years; navigating Piazza della Signoria, almost always packed with tourists and locals alike, requires patience. There's a reason why everyone seems to be here, however. It's the heart of the city, and home to the Uffizi—arguably the world's finest repository of Renaissance art.
