Hotel Review: Inspired & Luxurious - The Johnson

Travel News 25 Oct 2016

Part of the well renowned and popular Art Series group of hotels, The Johnson is the newest jewel in the crown of this successful hotel chain. Sitting in an easy to access, but also nice distance away from Brisbane CBD in Spring Hill, the hotel is open and airy with tons of natural light and open space. As you walk up to the property there is a large, bright metal sculpture and this colourful theme is continued throughout the hotel with beautiful, bright prints by Australian abstract artist, Michael Johnson.

What was your room like?

The rooms are large and airy, with high ceilings and large windows which stretch all the way from the floor up. Large block out curtains can be drawn to keep out that early Queensland sunshine in summer and there is a generous outdoor seating area with a table and stools. Art Series hotels are famous for their amazing beds, which, even though brand new it was a dream to sleep on. The room is otherwise tastefully appointed with retro-style furniture and brass finishes throughout. The colours used throughout are quiet but charming, which really allows the prints in the room to pop. The rooms come equipped with all the conveniences that one would expect of a brand new hotel, and a couple of additional inclusions like a microwave and coffee pod machine that come in handy.

What was the bathroom like?

Again the bathroom was large, if a strange shape, with a self enclosed shower and separate toilet. Two basins ensure that a couple sharing will not be stepping over each other when getting ready and there is a generous supply of amenities in the "evo" brand that the Art Series group use nationally.

Was there a conference room and other rooms that made it suitable for a corporate getaway?

Yes, The Johnson provides multi-purpose event facilities which are a hop, skip and a jump from Brisbane's CBD – so it makes the hotel an ideal venue for an offsite team planning day or meetings for groups who may be looking to escape the bustle of the city. There are three galleries which can be flexible for event set up and offer all the technological solutions required for meetings and conferences. There is of course WiFi throughout the property for easy internet access and The Johnson's onsite restaurant can provide catering options from breakfast to dinner and everything in between.

What other facilities were there?

There is a lovely, 50-metre lap pool and deck area complete with BBQ area that can be booked which is great if you're staying in the warmer months of the year. The hotel also offers a gymnasium which is fully equipped to meet even the biggest fitness fanatic's requirements – these are all in addition to the conference and meeting space outlined above.

Did you enjoy the food?

As mentioned previously, The Johnson has an onsite restaurant called Tumbling Stone, which offers "no-nonsense" delicious dining, whilst incorporating high quality local produce. Breakfast was included and consisted of several à la carte options and each of the menu options had a surprising twist which was delightful. The chilli scrambled eggs were delicious, although the portion sizes a little small for those who enjoy a big breakfast. Tumbling Stone can cater for everything from business lunches to family dinners and would make a great venue for a corporate dinner post meetings.

Any eating or entertainment nearby that corporate travellers might want to visit?

Located in Spring Hill in Brisbane, The Johnson is about a 10-15 minute stroll from either Brisbane's CBD or the diverse and eclectic Fortitude Valley. Otto Ristorante is a newly-opened Italian restaurant located in Brisbane's CBD which offers amazing cuisine and set in a beautiful brand new building on Queen St – a must visit for locals and visitors alike.

Who would you recommend this property for?

The Johnson is really ideal for interstate travellers who know Brisbane well enough and might want to escape the lights and sirens of the city. Although only minutes away from the CBD, Spring Hill is a lovely and quiet suburb which is immediately relaxing after a long day in the office. For persons living in Brisbane, The Johnson would be an excellent place to host your next strategy meetings or planning session with your teams.

What's your overall rating out of 5 and any final comments

Brand new, stylish, comfortable and beautifully appointed the score for The Johnson is 4 out of 5 stars – it definitely lives up to everything that one would come to expect from an Art Series hotel.
