Hotel Review: A tropical beach retreat for your next conference

Travel News 14 Dec 2015

If you're looking for an amazing experience for an upcoming small to medium size conference or planning retreat with your team – the Double Tree in Zanzibar could be the property for you!

Catherine Rankin, our Global Product Marketing Leader recently spent three nights at a conference at the property and shared her thoughts on the property with us.

Tell us about the property in general

Double Tree Resort by Hilton Hotels – Zanzibar Nungwi is located at the northern tip of the main island, in the small fishing village of Nungwi.  Leaving the hustle and bustle of Stone Town behind, the 70 minute drive takes you through local farmland and villages until you reach the guarded timber gates of the hotel and enter into the serene grounds.

The two storey hotel overlooks the quiet Nungwi beach and tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean where local women continue to fish in the traditional method of slapping the water with a stick while circling the fish into their nets!

What were the rooms like?

The rooms are large and well appointed with a wonderful Zanzibar flavour.  They are not your typical ‘chainwide’ rooms – you definitely know you are in Africa – with tiled floors, and of course the inevitable mosquito net draped over the dark timber post bed.

What was the bathroom like?

Bathrooms were large with an open shower, wide basins and ample hanging space!

Was there a conference room and other rooms that made it suitable for a corporate getaway?

Conference facilities are simple but easy - with the odd power outage!  NB: beware of meeting during the rainy season - it brings a whole new meaning to ‘inside-outside living’ (or conferencing in this case!).  The staff were fantastic and with very happy ‘Jambo’ smiles, they provided the entire hotel allotment of towels and all water was soon mopped up.

What other facilities were there?

The resort included the usual pool with swim-in bar as well as a large direct-access beach area with sun lounges. A spa with massage and beauty therapy treatments is also available on-site at reasonable prices. Possibly the best thing about the hotel was the all-inclusive rate, it was great knowing that all drinks at the bar wouldn't cost a thing (as long as you selected from the all-inclusive menu) it made check out very simple!

Did you enjoy the food?

The buffet was well equipped with some very ‘American’ style food, however it was possible to find some local flavours including amazing curries and a great range of seafood!

Who would you recommend this property for?

This is definitely a Bleisure hotel... easy meeting space, with excellent leisure activities for post business.  Being a 70 minute drive from the airport, you will want to spend quite a few days at this resort, soaking in the relaxed atmosphere of the surrounding fishing village.

What's your overall rating out of 5 and any final comments

A great resort with it’s own flavours of Zanzibar, while supported by a global hotel chain – a fantastic stay for both the conference and a little relaxing on the side – I give it 4.5 stars.
